The Downtown East faces a serious housing crisis. People sleep on the streets, crowd in homeless shelter or struggle to pay impossible rents to stay housed.
For years, community organizations have called for the vacant lots at 214-230 Sherbourne to be taken over by the city so that desperately needed social housing could be built there. Despite half-hearted efforts by City Hall to acquire the property, it has now been bought by KingSett Capital, a major property developer.
The last thing this community needs is another condo development, with a few token “affordable units” thrown in. Such a development at Dundas and Sherbourne will not only mean a lack of real housing but a major step in the gentrification of the neighbourhood.
230 Fightback is taking up a fight to stop the condo developer and win social housing. We plan to challenge the developer and the politicians who are responsible for this situation. The community needs real housing and we intend to win the fight to ensure it is built at Dundas and Sherbourne.
Come out to the community meeting on Jan 16 and get involved in this vital struggle.
